New Breastfeeding Medicine Journal Launched by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers

New Rochelle, NY, March 30,2006—Breastfeeding Medicine, a new peer-reviewed journal written by physicians for physicians was launched today by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. (www.liebertpub.com).  This new, interdisciplinary journal is the official publication of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine.  The premier issue is available free online at www.liebertpub.com/bfm
Breastfeeding Medicine is the only medical publication that provides physicians with the evidence-based information they need to understand the complexities and benefits of breastfeeding, and to educate their staff and their patients on all aspects of breastfeeding to ensure optimal care for both mother and infant. The Journal publishes original scientific papers, reviews, and clinical case studies on a wide spectrum of topics in lactation medicine such as the physiologic and psychologic benefits of breastfeeding; health consequences of artificial feeding; breastfeeding indications and contraindications; maternal nutrition; managing breastfeeding pain and complications; optimal breastfeeding equipment; international public health issues; and much more.

“A new era of interest in breastfeeding coupled with widespread evidence-based research in lactation medicine was the impetus for Breastfeeding Medicine,” said Mary Ann Liebert, President and CEO of Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. “With ever-increasing demands for the best science to justify the best outcomes in a cost effective way, research in this field continues to document that breastfeeding has a major impact on healthcare outcomes and costs since the baby has fewer medical problems (such as ear infections, allergies and obesity), as does the mother (such as lower incidence of breast and ovarian cancer),” she added.

“The Journal will foster the publication of new research, the sharing of clinical cases and experience, and the dissemination of information both within the organization and to our international audience,” says Joan Y. Meek, MD, MS, FABM, FAAP, President, Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine, and Academic Chairman of Pediatrics, Arnold Palmer Medical Center/Orlando Regional Healthcare.  The Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine (www.bfmed.org), is a worldwide organization of physicians dedicated to the promotion, protection, and support of breastfeeding and human lactation through education, research, and advocacy.

Ruth A. Lawrence, MD, past President of ABM, is the Editor-in-Chief of Breastfeeding Medicine. Dr. Lawrence is a renowned breastfeeding expert and pioneered a movement to educate medical students on the benefits of breastfeeding at the University of Rochester, NY, where she is Professor of Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology.  Cynthia Howard, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, URMC Department of Pediatrics, and Vice President/President Elect of ABM, is the Deputy Editor.
